Design

Design is an area that is relatively new to me, but that I'm immensely interested in. Most of my experience has come from running Cody's NHS Instagram. I have been experimenting with different forms of media and design styles as I've grown in my journalism career and gained more opportunities. I think that in journalism, design is essential to draw a reader into a story and attract an audience.

College Station Spirit

This is one of my first ever vector drawings. This year, I've had the opportunity to begin working with apps like Adobe Fresco and Illustrator to create designs more freely. When it comes to a new medium, I'm always up for a challenge. Drawing, per se, doesn't come naturally to me but I've always wanted to be good at it, so I found a way. Vector drawing has taught me a renewed sense of attention to detail, which has, in turn, helped me as a finish editor, especially when adjusting settings in effects like Ultra Key in Adobe Premiere.

Extra-Curricular Design: CHS Tennis

This year, I made our designs for Cody High School's Tennis Team apparel. The designs are traditionally made by seniors, and change annually. This year, I decided to take it in a different direction than we typically have before, incorporating mountains and using the HEX color schemes I extracted from our logo and drafted for CHS Wired's website as a guide for consistent coloring. If you look closely, you will notice that I used the lighter color of the scheme for contrast against the periwinkle blue tee shirts we ordered. I learned from this project how to handle and manage .SVG vector files, as the screen printing store required them.

Header Spread: Soffy Anderson's Poetry

I am creating this header for a feature on Soffy Anderson's poetry to be featured in our "CHS EQUUS" magazine. This year, I've worked closely with our CHS Bonfire crew to revive the EQUUS magazine after a several year hiatus. For the design, I spoke to Soffy at length about the meaning of her poetry and what her creative vision for such a header would be. I asked her broad questions that pertained to her poetry like "what planet do you identify with most," in order to be sure I had an accurate understanding of how she wanted her art to be portrayed. Together, Soffy and decided on a scheme that would fit in with the magazine, and then I photographed her and got to work. This piece is a work in progress, and I'm currently working on vectorizing the photo, and then I'll be working through my sketch of the design from there.
